World Series and Playoff Appearences

The Detroit Tigers have won 4 World Series Championships,1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984. The Tigers have reahed the World Series (AL Pennet) 11 times. In 1907, 1908, 1909, 1934, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1968, 1984, 2006, and 2012. One of the most memerble moments in Tigers playoff history was the 2006 ACLS. There were two men on base when Magglio Ordonez came strolling to the plate. On a 1-0 pitch he sent the ball deep left field for a home run. That hit led the Tigers to the World Series.

Another great moment came from the 1968 World Series. The Detroit Tigers lost game won 1 after Denny Mclain lost to Bob Gibson. Then Mickey Lolich had a complete game in game 2 to pick up a win. He also helped his own cause by hitting his only home run over his 16 year career. The Tigers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals the next 2 games. But once Mickey hit the mound in game 5 everything changed again. Mickey once again threw a complete game for the win. Then in Game 6 Denny Mclain threw a solid game for the win forcing a game 7. Then the last game of the series it was Gibson of the Cardinals vs. Mickey Lolich. Who ever one this game would have 3 wins in one series. Who would it be, Gibson, or Lolich? After a hard fought pitching duel Lolich had the win. For the last 50 years Lolich is the only man to ever complete 3 games in one series.

The last moment I am going to share with you is the fifth game from the 1984 World series. My Nana and Papa were actually at this game. Four games in a row the Padres pitcher didn't make it past the third inning. The Tigers had scored three runs in the first inning. The Padres got on the board in the third with a Bobby Brown single. He advanced to third by two groundouts and then scored on a Steve Garvey single. The Padres rallied in the fourth to tie the game when with runners on second and third Browns sacrifice fly and Alan's RBI single scored a run which parsuaded Sparky to take Dan Petry out of the Game. The Tigers loaded up the bases in the fifth and scored off of a sacrifice fly to put the tigers up 4-3. Parrish homered in the seventh to put up the Tigers by another run. The Padres answered with a solo shot by Bevacqua to put them within one. Kirk Gibson came up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth with runners on second an third with one out. Since he had homered earlier in the game, the Padres manager Dick Williams walked uup to the mound to talk to Goose Gossage. He was seemingly ordering Gossage to walk Gibson. Gossage finally pursuaded Williams to pitch to Gibson. Gibson answered with a three-run blast to give Detroit the lead for good out . with two outs in the top of the ninth Willie Hernandez ended the game by getting Tony Gwen to fly out to Larry Herndon.
